Prevention Services

We at the Council on Alcoholism & Addictions recognize that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We proudly provide comprehensive early awareness programs for schools (Kindergarten - College), community organizations, businesses and groups. As well as research based programs intended for youth who are at-risk or already involved with harmful drinking or drug use.

Prevention Initiatives:

  • Business and Staff Training: Customized staff development programs on alcohol, other drugs and addiction.
  • Problem Gambling Prevention: Problem gambling information, education, and referral services.
  • Resource Library: Free community access resource library and information on alcohol, substance use and problem gambling.
  • Screening and Referral-Consultation: Assessments and short-term supportive counseling to assist individuals to accept treatment or referral to appropriate levels of care.

Prevention Education Programs:

  • BASICS- Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students: This program is provided for SUNY Oswego students in violation of school conduct policies. BASICS consists of two 50-minute sessions and uses a harm reduction approach in moving a college student in the direction of reducing risky behaviors and harmful effects from drinking.
  • Project Intervention: Designed for non-violent first time drug offenders aged 25 and younger that are charged with the use or possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia. It is provided in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office. This program is a client-fee supported series of two, 2-hour sessions.
  • Project U-Turn: Designed for under-age youths who have been charged with DWI, DWAI or any other zero-tolerance related offense. It is provided in cooperation with the Oswego County STOP-DWI. This program is a client-fee supported series of two, 3-hour sessions. Project U-Turn is an OASAS approved Alcohol Awareness Program for youth.
  • Responsible Server Training (RST): Designed for anyone who distributes or serves alcoholic beverages and educates how to sell or serve responsibly. There are two different formats of this program, one for on-site drinking venues and one for venues that sell alcohol to be consumed off-site. Responsible Server Training is a GCASA program certified by the New York State Liquor Authority.
  • You(th) Decide: Youth Gambling Prevention Initiative: A gambling prevention initiative designed to increase community awareness about risks associated with problem gambling and how adolescents are more susceptible to developing gambling problems. This is a state initiative lead by the New York State Council on Problem Gambling.

Prevention Goals

  • To serve as a reliable and respected leadership organization on alcoholism and addictions.
  • Provide education programs to school age and college aged youth in Oswego County.
  • To promote and provide early intervention to at risk abusers and their families.
  • To provide information and to raise public awareness regarding gambling issues.
